Art in City Hall Exhibit Extended Until 2009 The City of Houston hast picked up the option to keep my painting Tres pájaros, (2007), on display through March 2009. The Art in City Hall Exhibit, City Hall Annex, 900 Bagby (just West of Houston City Hall). Take the elevators to the 4th floor (the City Attorney's floor) and turn right. You'll see the painting by the doors into the suite of offices. When You're Downtown... See my civic mural, María y José, (2001), in the Theater District, at the corner of Louisiana and Preston. Guest on Great Day Houston Here's a couple of screen captures of my May 2007 appearance on Whitney Casey's Great Day Houston on KHOU-TV Channel 11. More later.
I'm Blowing Up in Denmark and The Netherlands!
Like a parent finding a long-lost child, I was Google-ing myself (it's fun; try it sometime) once when I found a link to a Modern furniture store in Germany where they were selling a 30 cm long replica of Moocho Amor. But wait, there's more! Look in The Netherlands. I'm a hit all over the EU! It goes without saying that Europeans have mobetta taste than Americans. Here's a snowglobe version! In 2001, I was part of a fun and worthwhile endeavor for Texas Children's Hospital. Fundraisers at TCH invited me to paint TWO LIFE-SIZE FIBERGLASS cows produced by Cowparade, Inc. The sponsors for my cows were Spanish-language radio stations KOVE (K-Love) and KLTN (Estereo Latino). My creations were later auctioned off to benefit the hospital. Well, I never saw my cows, Moocho Amor and Fiestas Patrias, after that. The contract artists signed with Cowparade, Inc. gave the company the right to sell merchandise based on our designs through miniatures, t-shirts, posters, books, etc., without ever compensating us again (we were paid a minimal upfront fee for each cow we completed). My cows are in the Cowparade Houston book but they were never made into any merchandise in the U.S. 3rd
Place Prize at the Italian Chalk Art Festival in Austin! On November 5, 2005, I left H-town for Austin at 4:30 a.m. and 12 hours later I had completed a 5ft by 7ft prize-winning chalk painting on the parking lot asphalt of the Central Market - Westgate, 4477 S. Lamar Blvd. Over 80 artists participated at the two Central Markets in Austin. My masterpiece was inspired by the Classical Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. It's actually called Eurydice Lost, (2005), and like one of the themes of the myth, it would not last. It's now only a lovely memory. From the Italian Chalk Art Festival: "Because street painting is temporary, it focuses on the creation of the art. People can view the work in all stages of progress, from layout of the design, to applying colors, to the finished creation, whether it be a copy of a Masterpiece or an original work. Street painting is a performance art — where viewers can see the process of creation, as well as the end result." 2nd Place Prize in St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital Photography Contest My prize-winning photograph (I would call it a digital painting created from photos taken in the Texas Medical Center) was exhibited October 17-December 1, 2005, in the St. Luke's Hospital corridor between the Bates and Bertner lobbies. The piece's title is 092905, (2005). The entries were judged by nationally renowned Texas photographer Odin Clay. An outstanding fifty-year career in photography has earned Mr. Clay both the Master of Photography and Craftsman Photographer Degrees awarded by the Professional Photographers of America. His own photographs are on view in the St. Luke's Skybridge Gallery. Howard Sherman My good friend Howard Sherman is represented in Houston by McMurtrey Gallery, 3508 Lake Street, Houston, Texas 77098. Also see Howard's web site and his pieces in New American Paintings. |
