Heroes The word "hero" comes from ancient Greek myth and refers to the offspring of one of the gods who dwelled on Mount Olympus and a human being. These half-breeds or demigods were much like us but blessed with super-human abilities. Herakles (Hercules to the Romans), the son of Zeus and a mortal woman, was endowed with great strength, for example. In contemporary America we loosely apply the term on athletes or action-movie stars. This Veterans Day, our nation's leaders, both the Bush administration and Congress, bear equal responsiblity for putting our bravest in harm's way without checking the facts first or leveling with the American people. Those men and women who are there in Iraq, Afghanistan, or any of the fronts of the so-called “War on Terror” are heroes simply for serving honorably on this Veterans Day or any other day. Let’s pray they will all return home safely soon. 11 November 2005 |
